SALGA Mpumalanga officially hands over the SALGA/UNDP COVID-19 Relief Programme

SALGA Mpumalanga, in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has officially handed over the SMME Covid-19 relief programme to the 8 municipalities that were selected to participate in the programme. A total number of 102 businesses have benefitted from the programme, through financial and non-financial support.

Through the Japanese Government, funded were allocated to the UNDP for the implementation of this programme.

“I would like to acknowledge the Japanese Government for availing this funding to the UNDP so that we can be able to extend it to the needs of South African communities. We appreciate that SALGA understands the needs of its municipalities and those of its communities, by being able to identify SMME sectors that are beneficiaries of the programme within all provinces across the country. It is with great pleasure for us as UNDP to support and provide relief to the various businesses in Mpumalanga. Today is a day of celebration for all of us”, said Phumla Hlati Programme Manager: Inclusive Growth and Development from the UNDP.

The focus of this partnership sought to address the plight of SMMEs and Informal Traders and is aligned with SALGA’s 2017 – 2022 strategic agenda as well as the UNDP’s alignment with the World Health Organisations (WHO) Covid-19 Strategic preparedness and response plan. Some of the SMMEs which have benefitted from this partnership include, but are not limited to businesses such as township ICT centres, street restaurants, barber shops and beauty salons.

In Mpumalanga, eight (8) municipalities participated in the programmes, namely Victor Khanye, Dr JS Moroka, Thembisile Hani, Nkomazi, City of Mbombela, Thaba Chweu, Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme and Dipaleseng local municipalities within the three (3) districts.
